Kick Off event “Anton Wilhelm Amo in Berlin”

The Kick Off event “Anton Wilhelm Amo in Berlin” took place on April 26, 2024 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. This event was added last minute to the closing event and publication of the “Remembering Colonialism” (Kolonialismus erinnern). It was not originally part of the city-wide memory concept of “Colonialism” for Berlin, but rather a separate event. The Anton Wilhelm Amo Heritage Alliance, collaborated with our newly formed Regional Working Group ‘Anton Wilhelm Amo AG Berlin’ (Anton Wilhelm Amo Alliance Berlin), consisting of the Amo collective Berlin, a student group from HU Berlin, Decolonial city tours, and the Anton Wilhelm Amo Heritage Alliance, to explore places in Berlin connected to Anton Wilhelm Amo.  As usual, this event was documented with a beautiful graphic recording by our Tunisian sister of the Amo Alliance, Soufeina Hamed. Their approach was intersectional, viewing Amo as an inspiration for reflecting on diverse forms of classification and racialization in the city. Also their keynote speaker Sylvia Arthur, who created the first library on the African continent dedicated to authorship from Africa and the African diasporas, LOATAD, almost a decade ago, has once again highlighted the role Amo plays in the Black Archive and why we should honor him.
The Amo Alliance Berlin looked into Amo’s burial place, which was damaged during the last rainy season 2023. With the efforts of John Amoateng Kantara, Andrea Vicky Amankwaa-Birago, and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Paul from the University of Halle, rectorate commission of Anton Wilhelm Amo, funds by the German government were secured for the restoration of Amo’s grave, providing a dignified resting place.
After listening to the inputs by the various groups of the Amo Alliance Berlin, the organizers asked the audience: How can we create new narratives on Anton Wilhelm Amo in Berlin? The event featured a performance of the Afrofuturist play “Amo” by Prof. George Lewis, which premiered at the Biennale Venice (2021) dedicated to Savvy Contemporary. It was the first venue that came to mind, the temporary Amo Center at Savvy Contemporary. It was a space for strategic renaming processes in 2020.

Secondly, the Amo Salon (2023,  another memory site in honor of Anton Wilhelm Amo at HU Berlin, aims to create a public space in central Berlin for artists, researchers, and civil society to engage in discussions on colonial genealogies and their impact on contemporary society. The last but not least was the Decolonial Memorial #dekolonialesdenkzeichen(2024) , which the people  in the audience had remembered. It is a a site with a decolonial connection to Amo, this is where the headquarters of the Amo Heriage Alliance have their office. It is fostering new narratives in the city.
Another highlight was the visit of Bundestag member Dr. Karamba Diaby at the event at HKW, who has been advocating for a dignified remembrance of Anton Wilhelm Amo for years, and we are pleased that Halle now has an Anton Wilhelm Amo Street. Anton Wilhelm Amo lived and taught in Halle from approx. 1734 to  aporox. 1747. There he also defended his dissertation “The Rights of Moors in Europe”. Anton Wilhelm Amo’s critical political and philosophical engagement with the topic of human and civil rights took place before the French Revolution began in 1789 and the Haitian Revolution began in 1791.
